The Belmont Branch was established as a Mechanics Institute on January 8, 1887 and became the Belmont Public Library on May 15, 1893.

The Belmont Branch joined the Elgin County Library Co-Operative in 1949, after previously being a part of the Middlesex County Library System.

A new library building was constructed 1984-1985. The new building opened for business in February 1985, and officially opened at a ceremony held June 22, 1985. The official opening pamphlet can be seen in the column on the right.

Recently, an open house was held at the library on April 25, 2005 to showcase recent interior renovations.
